Demo Site

Eleusis Refinery (Greece) STEROPE will be demonstrated at HELLENiQ ENERGY’s Eleusis Refinery (Elefsina, Greece), one of the largest and most advanced refining complexes in the Eastern Mediterranean. The demonstration represents a first-of-a-kind CCU deployment fully integrated into an operating refinery, enabling validation under real industrial conditions.

Real-scale industrial demonstration

The STEROPE demonstration plant will be deployed within the refinery premises, capturing CO₂ from existing industrial processes and converting it into advanced renewable fuels for aviation and maritime transport.

By operating directly in a live industrial environment, the project validates the technical feasibility, safety and operational performance of an integrated CCU value chain at TRL7.

Pilot units and process integration

The demonstration includes three ATEX-compliant pilot units, installed in proximity to the existing Hydrogen Production Unit:
CO₂ Capture and Purification Unit
• Captures and purifies CO₂ from refinery operations, reducing emissions from hydrogen production processes.
• Catalytic Conversion Unit
Converts captured CO₂ into e-methanol and e-DME through advanced catalytic routes.
• SAF Production Unit
Enables the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) aligned with regulatory and quality requirements.

TRL7 validation under real conditions

By integrating capture, conversion and fuel production within an operational refinery, STEROPE demonstrates a scalable, end-to-end CCU pathway ready to support future industrial deployment across Europe.

Smart industrial integration

Prior to installation, a detailed pre-commissioning assessment will define optimal interconnections with existing refinery systems. The selected location provides direct access to essential utilities, including:
Demineralised water I Compressed air
Nitrogen I And Electrical power.

This ensures smooth installation, commissioning and operation of the pilot units with minimal disruption to refinery activities.
